 Welcome to the Cambridge Examination courses pages of Dover Nyelvi Centrum. Below you will find details of the courses offered, information about the examinations and some of the topics to be studied.

Dover Nyelvi Centrum offers Cambridge Examination preparation courses for FCE (First Certificate in English), CAE (Certificate in Advanced English), and CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English). Classes are taught in small groups (maximum seven students) by an experienced native speaking teacher. Courses cover all aspects of the FCE, CAE and CPE examinations, as well as exam techniques.  All courses are based on the most up-to-date course books, language materials produced by the teacher and other supplementary resources such as practice exam papers, handouts and worksheets.

 Who is the course for?

FIRST CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH (FCE)

FCE is ideal if you want to work or study abroad or to develop a career which requires language skills.  FCE indicates sufficient proficiency in English to be of practical use in clerical, secretarial and managerial in many industries, in particular tourism, where contact with English speakers is required.  Successful candidates have the ability to deal with routine letters and telephone enquiries, and to cope with some non-academic training courses and simple textbooks and articles.                                     

FCE is a one (or two) semester course for upper-intermediate level students. It is aimed at both students who want to work towards the FCE examination and those who simply want to improve their English at this level. The course covers all areas of the exam: Reading, Writing, Speaking, Use of English and Listening.  In addition, students will develop their vocabulary and improve their knowledge of grammar.

The course is topic based and will include some of the following topics:

Books and Reading

Entertainment

Weather and Climate

The FCE examination can be taken in December, March or June. It consists of five papers:

Paper 1:  Reading (1 hour)

CERTIFICATE IN ADVANCED ENGLISH (CAE)

This course is ideal for secondary, college and university students of English. Studying CAE helps you to improve your language skills and use them in a wide range of contexts. The exams are based on realistic tasks, and indicate the ability to use the language in practical situations. If you are successful, you will be able to participate in meetings and discussions, expressing opinions clearly, and be able to understand and produce texts of various types, including business letters and reports. You will also be more than capable of following university courses taught in English.

CAE is a two semester course. It is aimed at both students who want to work towards the exam and those who simply wish to improve their English skills at an advanced level. The course covers all areas of the exam: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking and English in Use. CERTIFICATE OF PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH (CPE)

Proficiency is the highest level Cambridge ESOL examination. If you are able to communicate effectively in almost any English-speaking context, have passed the Cambridge CAE or Rigó Felsőfokú, and are approaching a high standard of spoken English, this is the course will be suitable for you. As all Cambridge classes at Dover, the CPE course is aimed at both those who wish to work towards the Proficiency exam and those who simply want to develop their English to a very high level. The course is idea for college and university students of English, as well as teachers of English who would like to develop their English knowledge.

Proficiency is a two semester course. The course covers all areas of the exam: Listening, Reading, Writing, Use of English and Speaking. In addition, students will develop their vocabulary in many areas and expand their knowledge of idioms, phrasal verbs, fixed phrases and collocations, as well as areas of advanced grammar. Students will read a wide variety of newspaper and magazine articles for discussion in class.

The course is topic based and will include some of the following topics:

The Proficiency exam can be taken in either December or June. The exam consists of five papers:

Course Syllabus / Autumn 2009

Course Title:  Families in Turmoil
Instructor:      Patrick Mullowney

According to Tolstoy, all happy families are alike; all unhappy families are miserable in special ways. In this course, we will study four extremely unique American families. Their tales span five decades and introduce a myriad of social issues. We will discuss the dilemmas faced by each of these families as well as the difficult art of parenting. Material and study guides will be provided in class.

The following is a short description of all the course material:

1) “Next of Kin” (1997)
short story by David Sedaris from his book Naked
This wild and funny short story is about a boy’s discovery of a pornographic paperback novel with atrocious typographical errors. He shares the book with his four younger siblings, completely unprepared for the strange effect it will have on his family life.

2) The Bad Seed (1954) [with video material]
 dramatization by Maxwell Anderson of the novel by William March
Can a child be a cold-blooded killer? Can one inherit evil? Also, what is a mother to do when she is torn between love for her child and her sense of moral right? Maxwell Anderson’s suspense-filled plot explores these issues as it progresses to an unstoppable, horrific climax.
The Bad Seed provides a revealing picture of the 1950’s American mentality of home and social life. The film, a shocker when it was released in 1956, is both hilarious and chilling by today’s standards. It includes excellent performances, especially by child-star Patty McCormack as the disturbed and manipulative little girl.

3) Baby with the Bathwater (1983)
 comedy by Christopher Durang
No one said raising a child was easy. For John, who is alcoholic and unemployed, and his wife Helen, who is clueless and unstable, parenting is a nightmare. Add a psychopathic nanny and a needy stranger who is determined to kidnap their child, and you have a recipe for disaster. Christopher Durang blends dark humor and absurd theatre to give us an unforgettable portrait of the perils of modern parenthood.

4) TransAmerica (2006) [with video material]
 film written and directed by Duncan Tucker
A week before her sexual reassignment surgery, conservative transsexual Bree Osbourne undergoes a strange journey. She must find and get to know the long-lost son that (s)he fathered 17 years ago.
Their encounter leads to a bizarre cross-country adventure, a road trip including a visit with Bree’s parents, that will change both their lives. Peter Hammond, a critic for Maxim magazine, described the film as “fiercely funny and deeply powerful.”  TransAmerica is a minefield of modern-day issues and features an astonishing, fearless performance by Felicity Huffman.

TOEFL vizsga a Professzorok Házában tehető, jelentkezés alapján. (Budapest, 1146 Ajtósi Dürer sor 19. Tel: 220 80 56) Azoknak szükséges letenniük ezt a vizsgát, akik az Egyesült Államokban vagy néhány más ország  felsőoktatási intézményben szeretnének tanulni. Érdemes felvilágosítást kérni attól az intézménytől, ahol tanulni szeretnének, hogy szükséges-e TOEFL vizsga a felvételhez. A vizsga két évig érvényes.

A Dover Nyelvi Centrum TOEFL vizsgaelőkészítőit majdnem kizárólag anyanyelvi tanárok végzik. Jellemző csoportlétszám a 2-3-4 fő, az ajánlott óraszám 2x3 óra hetente. Tankönyvként a Longman SKILLS AND STRATEGIES Deborah Phillips által összeállított, először 1996-ban kiadott, azóta sokszor átdolgozott verzióját használjuk.

b/ we can offer you two- or three-day one-to-one courses in Budapest, eight hours a day followed by a daily two- or three-hour practice trip in town. Besides the essential survival language you may choose to study the essential words and expressions of your special field of interest - for example, horses, sports, folk dances, music, religion, history, etc.  

Of course, we can tailor the number of classes to the student's needs and capacities. If more than one student applies for the same class, the set fee is divided by the number of students.

Tuition fee: 3800 HUF (approx. 16 US Dollars or 14 Euros / teaching hourdivided by the number of people in the group. (One teaching hour is 45 minutes.)

Extensive Hungarian
For those who stay in Hungary for at least four months and would like to study Hungarian, we can offer 2x2 hours/week classes. Teachers who teach English in Hungary and students who study at universities may find it a comfortable time to study from14.30 to 16.00. We also plan to have Hungarian classes from 18.30 to 20.00. We prefer small classes of 3-6 people.

Tuition fee varies between 1200 and 600 HUF/ 45 minute class, depending on the number of people in the class. (cca. 6 to 3 US dollars).

Enrollment is till September 23rd, but we accept applications any time if we can find a suitable class.

For businessmen we arrange face-to-face Hungarian classes in their offices or on our premises. Our present rate is 15 EU/ 45 minute class.  

Recommended number of classes: at least two 45 minute classes twice a week.

The most authentic way to find out about all this is to mingle with the native people and communicate in their beautiful and exciting language. It is not difficult at all! After all, Hungarians generally assume that their language is the hardest in the world to learn. Consequently, they will praise you for mastering the simplest sentences.

Do not follow the regular tourist path if you can help it. The Hungarian countryside offers as much fun, cultural thrill and excitement as the astonishingly attractive Budapest.

Go to the fabulous spas all over the country, take a bird watching trip and share the warmth of the shepherds? fire on an early autumn night under the starry sky of the improbable Hungarian plain, the Kardoskút puszta or Hortobágy. Join in dancing the lovely csardas in one of the Dance Houses. You are guaranteed to have the time of your life.

Come up with a few words of one of those juicy Hungarian songs, cite one or two lines of the poems - "Szülőföldemen" by Sándor Petőfi or "Mama" by József Attila - rattle off the names of a few Hungarian Nobel Prize winners while having a glass of some fine Hungarian wine, and you are sure to have found a very special place in the heart of a Hungarian. Just ask some of our precious teachers - Mr. Patrick Mullowney, for one.

Music, poetry and harsh reality entwine in the Hungarian halo.With the Hungarians' assumption that their language is the most difficult, they will make several allowances. Still, it is up to you to learn  the essential Hungarian.

This book is easy to follow, doesn't overcrowd the pages with information, is written with humour and encourages the student along the way. I do not have the audio cassettes for this book, however I would definitely recommend you purchase them too, as listening to foreign speakers and trying to imitate their accent is essential when learning a foreign language, especially one like Hungarian where intonation and stress are so important. Hongrois approfondi
Pour ceux qui restent en Hongrie pendant au moins quatre mois et voudraient étudier le hongrois pendant cette période, nous proposons 2x2 heures de cours /semaine. Les professeurs qui enseignent l’anglais en Hongrie et les étudiants qui étudient à l’université pourraient trouver un créneau pratique de 14.30 à 16.00. Nous envisageons également d’avoir des cours de hongrois de 18.30 à 20.00. Nous préférons les petits groupes de 3 à 6 personnes.
Les frais d’inscription varient entre 600 and 1200 HUF/45 minutes de cours, selon le nombre de personnes dans la classe. (environ 3 à 6 dollars US).
Les inscriptions ont lieu jusqu’au 23 septembre mais nous acceptons les demandes tout au long de l’année et faisons de notre mieux pour trouver un cours qui convienne.

Le meilleur moyen de s’en rendre compte est de se mêler aux autochtones et de s’exprimer dans leur belle et passionnante langue. Ce n’est pas si difficile! Après tout, les Hongrois eux-mêmes estiment que leur langue est la plus difficile au monde à apprendre. Ainsi, ils ne tariront pas d’éloges si vous maîtrisez des phrases de base.
Ne suivez pas le sentier battu des touristes si vous pouvez l’éviter. La campagne hongroise offre autant d’amusements et d’émotions culturelles que la merveilleusement attrayante Budapest.
Allez dans les fabuleux spas partout dans le pays, participez à une excursion d’observation des oiseaux et partagez l’accueil chaleureux des bergers. Allumez un feu, une nuit au début de l’automne, sous le ciel étoilé dans l’invraisemblable plaine hongroise, la puszta de Kardoskút ou de Hortobágy. Joignez-vous aux danseurs de csardas dans l’une des maisons de la danse. Vous êtes sûr de vivre une expérience mémorable.
Présentez-vous en déclamant les paroles de quelque chanson hongroise grivoise, récitez un ou deux vers du poème "Szülőföldemen" de Sándor Petőfi ou "Mama" de József Attila. Un verre de vin hongrois délicieux à la main, citez les noms de quelques Hongrois prix Nobel et vous êtes sûr d’avoir profondément touché le cœur d’un Hongrois. Demandez donc à l’un de nos excellents professeurs - Mr. Patrick Mullowney, par exemple.
La Hongrie possède une aura où s’entrelacent la musique, la poésie et la rude réalité.
Etant donné qu’ils estiment que leur langue est la plus difficile au monde, les Hongrois feront l’effort d’essayer de vous comprendre. Quoi qu’il en soit il ne tient qu’à vous d’apprendre les bases du hongrois.

Colloquial Hungarian est un manuel convivial allant de la grammaire de base au hongrois contemporain. A travers des dialogues et le récit de situations modernes de la vie quotidienne, l’étudiant novice de hongrois est porté pas-à-pas à travers les méandres de cette langue à part entière et passionnante. Les étudiants apprendront à s’exprimer sur divers thèmes tels que les voyages, le shopping, les visites, la famille, le monde des affaires, les loisirs, les maladies, l’amour, ainsi qu’à distinguer les différents registres de langue.
Les dialogues et les mises en situation sont modernes, vivants et réalistes ; la présentation de la grammaire est claire et directe. Chaque chapitre présente en moyenne trois dialogues (ou l’équivalent) qui introduisent systématiquement de nouvelles situations avec le vocabulaire approprié nécessaire dans des cadres formels et informels. Les nouvelles constructions grammaticales sont introduites au fur et à mesure dans chaque nouveau dialogue, qui comprend également ce qui a été appris au préalable.
Les dialogues et les remarques culturelles figurant dans chaque chapitre fournissent une introduction à la vie en Hongrie. C’est ainsi que, lors de son apprentissage, l’étudiant est initié à des poèmes hongrois exemplaires, des morceaux de prose et reçoit des commentaires historiques et des informations sur d’autres aspects de la culture hongroise : danse, musique, cuisine. Les appendices contenant les formes des verbes irréguliers, les classes de noms et des paradigmes de noms complets servent aussi de guide de référence pratique.
POURQUOI CE LIVRE ET PAS UN AUTRE ? 
Tel que le suggère le titre de la série de manuels, l’accent est mis sur une multitude de rencontres de la vie quotidienne vivantes, intéressantes et d’actualité. C’est la meilleure formule pour les débutants qui souhaitent apprendre le hongrois en s’éloignant de l’anglais. Grâce en soit rendue à l’auteur ! (Prof. Peter Sherwood, Ecole d’études slaves et de l’Europe orientales).
Ce livre est facile à suivre, ses pages ne sont pas surchargée en informations ; il est rédigé avec humour et encourage l’étudiant pendant tout son parcours. Je ne dispose pas des cassettes audio pour ce manuel néanmoins je vous conseille vivement de les acheter aussi car il est essentiel d’écouter des étrangers et d’essayer d’imiter leur accent lorsque vous apprenez une langue étrangère, tout particulièrement le hongrois pour laquelle l’intonation et l’emphase occupent une place si importante. « Colloquial Hungarian » est un excellent point de départ pour votre expérience linguistique (Un lecteur d’Australie, Amazon.com).

Des cassettes et CD de deux fois 60 minutes sont en vente et accompagnent le manuel « Colloquial Hungarian ». Enregistrés par des intervenants de langue maternelle, ils complètent le manuel et vous aideront à développer vos capacités d’écoute et de prononciation.

A Dover Nyelvi Centrum abban a kivételes helyzetben van, hogy két kitűnő, vietnami anyanyelvű tanár várja a vietnámi nyelven tudni akarókat. A vietnámi munkára, vagy az ebbe a gyönyörű országba pihenni  indulókat nemcsak nyelvi szempontból, hanem a kulturális különbségek áthidalására is felkészítjük.
